About the Show

This delightful romp of a play was first staged on Broadway in 1938 as The Merchant of Yonkers. After the Second World War Thornton Wilder made some minor adjustments to his script and the version we see today was launched at the Edinburgh Festival in 1954 under the title ‘The Matchmaker.’ After a successful season in London’s West End it opened on Broadway in 1955. A film adaptation was made in 1958 and in 1964 the musical Hello Dolly, which was based on the play, opened on Broadway. In 1969 the film version of this musical appeared. The Matchmaker is a play about the joy of life. It tells us that life must be valued and explored and lived to the full, so we hope that you enjoy and value the little adventure we bring you today.
